Ashley has achieved national prominence in advising corporate and high wealth clients on the strategic management of ATO reviews, audits and disputes, including negotiating settlements and advising on tax audit defence. Ashley has a deep knowledge of ATO policies and decisions impacting tax disputes – including settlements, rulings, audits, access to information, assessment powers and the general anti-avoidance rules (GAAR). Ashley has effective relationships across the ATO and brings unique insight to tax issues. He has acted as witness and advocate in numerous tax matters, for both the ATO and clients. He represents the Australia and New Zealand Chartered Accountants on the ATO’s Dispute Resolution Committee. Ashley is also a member of the Australian Tax Institute’s Legal and Dispute Resolution Committee. Ashley has again been recognised as one of Australia's leading Tax Controversy and Dispute Resolution advisers by being included in the 2019-2020 International Tax Review - Tax Controversy Leaders Guide. This is the 6th year that Ashley has received such recognition as evidence of what he brings to his clients. |
History
Ashley is a Former Senior Assistant Commissioner at the ATO and partner at both Deloitte and PwC. Ashley was one of the youngest tax officers to have been promoted to the position of Assistant Commissioner in the ATO in 2001, and was Senior Assistant Commissioner (Large Business & International division) when he left the ATO to join PwC in 2007.
After spending more than 20 years with the ATO, Ashley left in 2007 to specialise in advising taxpayers that are subject to audit and review by the ATO. During the last 10 years Ashley's clients have benefited from the insight from his experience as an ATO officer, and from having advised hundreds of clients through ATO reviews, audits, and disputes. Ashley has been regularly called upon by the media and the tax profession for his views on tax controversy matters.
In 2018, with almost 10 years’ experience as a tax partner with Deloitte and PwC, Ashley commenced consulting through his own specialist practice - TaxResolve. He joined Nuwaru in 2019 to further expand his services.
Expertise & typical clients
By combining his extensive ATO experience and insight, Ashley has been instrumental in negotiating numerous tax audit settlements in the banking, investment, pharmaceutical, mining, oil and gas industries, including disputes in relation to cross-border finance, investment structures, transfer pricing, valuation and anti-avoidance provisions.
He also has extensive experience in representing and advising high wealth clients and families involved in land subdivision, land development, property
investment and property development, in both company and trust structures.
He has represented clients at the ATO’s anti-avoidance panel, in submissions and negotiations on fraud and evasion, and in valuation disputes.
He has also successfully assisted clients in obtaining favourable ATO rulings and an advanced market-valuation agreement.
Qualifications
Ashley qualified with a Commerce degree at the University of Canberra and subsequently completed a Master of Taxation Laws at the University of NSW, majoring in International Tax. He is a Chartered Tax Adviser with the Tax Institute, and a Registered Tax Agent.
What Ashley does when not in a suit
Ashley loves exercising, watching sport, listening to a variety of music and following current affairs and politics, both in Australia and overseas. He also loves travelling with family and friends, particularly to warm destinations.
He also devotes considerable care and attention to his two teenage daughters, attempting to shape and encourage them to be their best, learn important issues and live healthy and enjoyable lives
